Australian Mining Labourer Jobs and Employment

The following features a brief outline on this type of mining industry job.

Working at a mine site can be physically demanding work, especially if you are a labourer. However it can be very rewarding too, with mine companies offering you much higher salaries for doing a similar job you could have been doing back home. If you are looking to gain this type of position, then you may want to know:

  • what license/s you need
  • if there are traineeships available
  • whether you need mining and/ or labouring experience
  • what sort of training is required and where to get it
  • what certification is required
  • and how soon you can start

Considering there is a large number of mine sites located throughout Australia, there may be a Labouring position available close to where you live. Otherwise you may be interested in a fly in/ fly out (FIFO) position. A typical day for a Labourer could include help tradespersons when required, operating power tools, provide assistance for cleaning and maintaining mining equipment, assist in the operation of heavy machinery, and obtain mineral samples. A Labouring position is ideal for you if you:

  • want to work your way up in the mining industry
  • have several years experience as a labourer
  • can pass a pre employment medical examination
  • want an entry level job in mining
  • have current first aid certification or able to obtain this

If you haven't had experience in labouring before, you still have a chance to be employed in the mining industry. There are many mine companies who are willing to take on unskilled employees who are willing to put in a hard day's work. The median age for Labourers in the mining industry is 36 years, so if you think you need to be just out of high school to obtain this sort of position, then you are mistaken.

If you are considering getting into the mining industry, now is a great time to do so, for both skilled and unskilled workers.
