Australian Mining Geologist and Employment
Mine companies commonly employ people to search for new mineral deposits, to help prepare mine sites for mining or to restore mine sites after work is completed. In this field of work, geologists undertake extensive field work and surveying. A geologist position in the mines is ideal for graduates or others who have worked as a geologist in other industries. A starting salary is around $100,000 a year.
If you are looking to gain this type of position, then you may want to know:
what license/s you need
whether you need mining and/ or experience in a similar role
what sort of training is required and where to get it
what certification is required
and how soon you can start
Considering there is a large number of mine sites located throughout Australia, there may be a geologist position available close to where you live. Otherwise you may be interested in a fly in/ fly out (FIFO) position. A typical day for a geologist would include operating 4 WD vehicles to reach remote places, using a GPS navigational system to locate sites of interest, collect soil samples, perform gridding, extensive map use, prepare and rehabilitate mine sites, maintain camps and vehicles.
A Geologist position is ideal for you if you:
have a drivers license for the state you wish to work in
can pass a police clearance
able to pass pre-employment medical
have at least 1 to 2 years experience in a similar role
have a degree in geology
If you do not have these, we can advise you on how to obtain these and then apply for a position as Geologist. If you do not have a degree in geology, and would like to work in this department then you may be interested in a field assistant position.
