Australian Mining Field Assistant Jobs and Employment

The following features a brief outline on this type of mining industry job.

Mine companies commonly employ people to take mineral samples, and to help prepare mine sites for mining. Once mining activities are complete, they will also work to rehabilitate the site. They are usually referred to as Sample Preparers and Field Assistants. A Sample Preparer is an entry level job that progresses to Field Assistant. This is a very rewarding job for those who want to work in the Geology sector of the mining industry.

If you are looking to gain this type of position, then you may want to know:

  • what license/s you need
  • if there are traineeships available
  • whether you need mining and/ or experience in a similar role
  • what sort of training is required and where to get it
  • what certification is required
  • and how soon you can start

Considering there is a large number of mine sites located throughout Australia, there may be a Field Assistant position available close to where you live. Otherwise you may be interested in a fly in/ fly out (FIFO) position. A typical day for a Field Assistant would include operating 4 WD vehicles to reach remote places, using a GPS navigational system to locate sites of interest, collect soil samples, perform gridding, cleaning, prepare and rehabilitate mine sites, maintain camps and vehicles, and assisting Geologists when required to do so.

A Field Assistant position is ideal for you if you:

  • have a drivers license for the state you wish to work in
  • have first aid certification
  • can pass a police clearance
  • able to pass pre-employment medical
  • have at least 1 to 2 years experience in a similar role

If you do not have these, you can obtain them and then apply for a position as Field Assistant. If you do not have 1 to 2 years experience as a Field Assistant you can still apply for the position of Sample Preparer.
